Dr. Ruth Katherina Martha Pfau was a physician. She was German by birth. But she migrated to Pakistan and devoted nearly 50 years of her life to fighting leprosy. She died at 87. Tributes are pouring in for the services she provided for the people of Pakistan battling leprosy. State funeral was given as announced by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. PM Abbasi said in a statement that “she gave new hope to innumerable people and proved through her services that serving people needs no boundary”. “We are proud of her exemplary services and she will remain in our hearts forever as a shining symbol”, he added. Ruth Pfau came to Pakistan in 1960 and spent rest of her life. She specialized in the treatment of leprosy. She was awarded Nishan-e-Quaid-e-Azam, one of Pakistan’s highest civil awards. People from all walks of life are paying condolences and also mourning for her across Pakistan. People from different sections of Pakistani society condole her family comparing her with the late philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi who passed away last year. The poor people of Pakistan lost another philanthropist in Dr. Ruth Pfau. Her services were exemplary and idealistic in a sense that she left her own country just to help needy and poor people of another country, Pakistan on the ground of humanity. She made the concept of boundary wrong for help and service. People are all equal wherever they live. We need to seek to come forward when they need our attention.
